Professor and Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing; Senior Fellow, Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics; Director of the School’s WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership

Dr. Villarruel’s research focuses on interventions to reduce sexual risk behaviors among Mexican and Latino youth; one such program she has developed, entitled Cuídate!, has been disseminated nationally.

Dr. Villarruel’s national leadership roles include serving as chair of the IOM Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Villarruel received the President’s Award for Health Behavior Intervention Research from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research and was inducted to the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.
